<< Who are we

Some of the facts that the students in the Network will be advocating include:

    • Most older people are and will be in developing countries, which are experiencing population ageing at a very fast rate, much faster than ageing of developed countries.
    • For old people to remain contributing to society they need health, which is essential to their well being and quality of life.
    • Contrary to common beliefs, many older people are maintaining good health into very old age. Even though they are at risk of chronic diseases like CVD and diabetes, which in turn may result in disability, a vast majority does remain physically fit and active well into later life, it is essential to promote to maintain this high functional capacity.
    • Maintaining a high functional capacity is a lifelong process that starts before birth. Well-being at an old age may be the sum total of a whole lifetime of events. From fetus to old age, decisions can be made to ensure a high functional capacity throughout the life of the individual. Hence the importance of the life course perspective to ageing is evident. The active ageing message targets people at all ages
